SO YOU WANT TO HOMESCHOOL?

Beginning homeschooling can seem overwhelming at first, but with careful planning and research, you can start the journey confidently. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you begin homeschooling:

  1. Research Homeschooling Laws: Understand the legal requirements for homeschooling in your state. Laws vary, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with the regulations, including compulsory education age, required subjects, record-keeping, and any necessary paperwork or notifications to authorities. In the state of South Carolina your first step is to register with an accountability group like Pathway. In Florida, your first step will be to send a Letter of Intent to your local school district.

  2. Set Your Educational Goals: Determine your reasons for homeschooling and what you hope to achieve. Consider your child's learning style, interests, and any specific educational needs. Establish clear goals for academic, social, and personal development.

  3. Choose a Homeschooling Approach: Explore different homeschooling methods such as traditional, Classical, Charlotte Mason, Montessori, unschooling, or eclectic. Select an approach that aligns with your child's learning style. Unsure of what homeschooling approach to take? 4. Select Curriculum and Resources: Research and choose curriculum materials, textbooks, online resources, and educational tools that support your chosen homeschooling method and meet your educational goals.

  5. Establish Record-Keeping Systems: Keep organized records of your child's progress, including attendance, grades, and a plan book. Maintain portfolios or transcripts as required by your state's homeschooling laws.

  6. Monitor Progress and Celebrate Achievements: Regularly assess your child's academic progress and growth, both formally through assessments and informally through observations and conversations. Create a semi-annual progress report for your student

Remember, homeschooling is a unique path for each family, and it's okay to experiment, learn, and adjust along the way. No one is more invested in your child’s education than you!
